The British tennis star secured the biggest success of his professional journey by rallying from a set down to defeat top-ranked player Carlos Alcaraz with a stunning comeback in the early stage of the prestigious indoor tournament.

Even though he had previously overcome Alcaraz on two prior meetings, this triumph signifies Norrie's maiden success over a current world No 1.

"Huge. Extremely important for me," said Norrie, who becomes the latest English competitor in the record books to beat a top-ranked player. "Coming back from a physical setback last year, I fell in the first round of qualifying rounds here. I just aimed to enjoy my game in the latter part of the year. To achieve a triumph like this, it's the greatest success of my career, my initial victory over the world No 1 and probably the most confident player in the sport right now."

Norrie, seeded 31st in the world, also halted Alcaraz's impressive streak of nine finals in a row and 17 successive elite tournament victories, which represented the top run of results in the young champion's early professional path.

The top seed appeared to be moving confidently to a win in the beginning as he cruised in the first set. Yet, Norrie steadily worked himself into contention by delivering with sharper placement and pulling the Spanish opponent into prolonged, demanding rallies. His unceasing consistency and reliability gradually left its mark.

During large parts of the match, the world number one served well but he had difficulty to find his timing with his rally strokes. The 22-year-old appeared notably uneasy executing his forehand, which has been the top weapon in the world for a large part of this season, haemorrhaging 29 mistakes off the forehand side and a total of 54 unforced errors. Opposing him, the British player gave Alcaraz so few mistakes, maintaining his consistency, fitness and depth the entire contest while serving efficiently and choosing his moments to move forward and play aggressively.

Personal Background

After battling for an extended period due to a serious left forearm injury and difficulties with his performance, Norrie slipped as far down as 91st globally this year. After making the advanced stages at Wimbledon and the Roland Garros round of 16 after that, this triumph highlights the 30-year-old's progress as he seeks to return to the top 20 and even higher.
