Emerging Foreign Policy Vision Points to The Continent's Core Issue: A Supposed Shortfall of Racism?

Throughout his initial presidency, commentators often suggested that Donald Trump's remarks should be taken seriously rather than literally. Yet, subsequent events indicate that this approach could have reversed the logic.

An emergent U.S. National Security Strategy alongside multiple statements from administration officials, Trump proxies, and Trump himself have sparked potentially one of the most severe crises for transatlantic unity, the doctrine that has sustained peace and democracy in Europe since 1945.

From Burden-Sharing to Cultural Anxiety

Whereas Trump's earlier critique focused on Europe's alleged failure to fund its own defense, his rhetoric has now embraced a significantly more disturbing perspective.

Tinged with racism and a deep-seated contempt for Europe's political institutions and elected leaders, he has issued warnings about the potential of societal collapse on a continent he has rarely visited and mostly seen from a distance.

This paranoid Maga perspective, which has shaped contentious U.S. immigration and policing policies, now appears to be shaping Washington's understanding of Europe.

The Racist Core

From this vantage point, migration from the global south leads to a cultural dilution of European societies, making them "feeble" under "stupid" leaders and paving the way for their eventual decline. This is an unabashedly racist theory, with the president's allies explicitly endorsing far-right movements across Europe.

Although the general thrust of this race-baiting is not new, its specific implications for the continent's defense are essential to grasp.

In the view of the president and his adherents—a group that includes billionaire Elon Musk, who recently advocated for the breakup of the EU—all politics is inherently transactional. However, whereas he once claimed was about financial fairness, the current assertion is that a decadent Europe is fundamentally unworthy due to its shift toward diversity.

A Self-Fulfilling Prophecy

During the conversation, Trump himself connects these ideas in a kind of rhetorical loop. He concedes that Russia's Vladimir Putin desires a weak Europe. Trump then declares Europe is weak, and in exposing the fissures in the transatlantic alliance, he objectively helps Putin by actively undermining European unity—all while claiming it's not his "fault".

This dynamic is playing out at possibly the most critical moment for Europe in decades, with a devastating war in Ukraine and rising provocations across the continent.

While Europe draw closer to Ukraine facing persistent threats of American abandonment, the danger is that Trump has constructed a justifying narrative for ignoring his allies.

The European Response

These developments demands a robust response from capitals across Europe. While some figures, including Germany's leader, have been blunt in their pushback, including British officials—have opted for a strategy of seeking to placate the White House.

Recently, the UK government declined to push back on Trump's comments about Europe or his renewed attack on London Mayor Sadiq Khan.

The spokesperson stated, "The Prime Minister enjoys a strong relationship with the U.S. president and a good working relationship with the Mayor of London, and is committed to cooperating with each to achieve better outcomes for the British public."

The undeniable truth is that Trump means his words and says what he means consistently. It is past time to abandon the pretense that things are different.
