European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were at the heart of efforts to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the move.

The restrictions were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders argue the regulations are necessary to control inflammatory language and disinformation.

This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a much broader existing political and ideological clash between Washington and European institutions.
