Nutrition Assistance Scheduled to Cease for Tens of Millions Throughout Continuing Government Closure

Federal agriculture authorities stated on Saturday that monthly food benefits through a critical national support systems will not be distributed in November amid the persistent government funding lapse.

Closure Continues For Nearly Four Weeks

The federal closure was in nearly a month when the announcement was made, in response to demands from hundreds of Democratic representatives asking the USDA to tap into reserve accounts to fund November's food assistance.

“Ultimately, resources are exhausted,” the department confirmed. “Now, there will be no benefits issued” starting next month.

National Consequences

Tens of millions of people count on the regular assistance, according to the USDA. Some regions, including one southwestern state, reliance on this assistance reaches 21% of residents.

Documents reviewed by Reuters revealed that the department would not access reserve funds to cover next month's assistance.

Partisan Impasse

Lawmakers from both parties remain deadlocked about the way to fund and reopen government operations.

A statement from the head of a prominent policy organization indicated that the administration had opportunities to prepare in advance to avoid interruption in payments.

“It could have, and should have taken steps weeks ago to be prepared to utilize available money,” the statement continued. “Rather, officials could opt out for potential political benefit” as conservative leaders work to pressure Senate Democrats to support a funding package that would reopen government operations.

Local Responses

Governors in multiple regions issued emergency declarations in recent days to make money available to combat potential hunger in anticipation of nutrition assistance payments stopping next month.
