The Details Known About the Fatalities of the Bondi Terrorist Incident

A minimum of 16 individuals were killed and in excess of 40 were wounded when gunmen fired on a Hanukkah gathering at Bondi Beach, an incident Australian police have called a act of terrorism.

As of the newest reports, authorities have confirmed the number of fatalities is 16, including one of the suspected attackers. Furthermore, 42 wounded individuals were taken to the hospital.

Those who died are still awaiting publicly named, but police believe their ages span between 10 and 87 years of age.

Eli Schlanger

London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Reportedly a father-of-five, he worked as the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and acquaintances described him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How is it possible that a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a relative said.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their youngest child just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, as stated by his wife.

She told the moments before the shooting, stating they had been standing together when the shooting erupted. “He shielded me because he wanted to stay near me,” she recalled.

The pair were both survivors of the Holocaust, having experienced immense hardship in their youth. They had subsequently relocated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

The French foreign ministry have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

Officially, the Foreign Minister declared that France mourned with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must put a stop to,” the statement read.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital is among those who had died, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was also killed in the incident, according to multiple sources citing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people taken to hospital, many are still receiving treatment, with five in critical condition. The injured include two officers who attended the scene.

A wounded man is a bystander who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the attackers. Hailed as a hero, he received gunshot wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. It has been reported he was injured and is receiving treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he recounted the scene as an “horrific scene,” but also noted the response of those who came to assist. He said he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the attack. He described he heard “a large number” of shots.

“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I’ve been shot myself. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
