The esteemed football figure has made clear that he is not seeking a return to football management, noting that it would be tough to recreate the special mission he experienced as England’s manager.

The former coach indicated his intention to channel his attention toward engaging the next generation and addressing what he labeled a pervasive negative narrative currently existing in the country.

Embracing Different Paths Beyond Coaching

In a recent radio interview, the manager was questioned on rumors linking him with vacant management roles in the Premier League and elsewhere.

“I’ve had one of the most incredible jobs in football which also had a higher purpose because it was my country,” he replied. “Recreating that unique role won’t be easy. With 37 years in football behind me, I’m excited to identify fresh ways to create impact.”

Dedication to Role Models

Prior to the launch of his upcoming book, his new work on leadership, he stated that he is highly enthusiastic about offering guidance for young people, applying experiences from his tenure as leader of the England team from 2016 and 2024, as well as his role as a father.

He believes that his time managing the squad, during which the team transformed from being deeply unpopular to widely supported, holds general lessons.

“Initially, the relationship with supporters was severely strained,” he noted. “People saw us as high-ego players but we were able to turn that around. I saw the power that the team had to bring people together of every community.”

Parenting and Guiding Young People

Reflecting on his role as a parent, Southgate commented: “You want to give your kids the best possible start, but there is a point when they don’t want to listen to parents any more. I experienced that in my house in the same way everybody else will … but I do think this is an important space for us.”

He continued: “There’s a negative narrative around our country at the moment and we’ve got to give young people hope, we’ve got to give them guidance. We’ve got incredible talent but we need to them to find the right role models, the right friendship groups because those decisions have such a big impact on the rest of their lives.”

Unity Over Discord

Southgate insisted that “there is more that unites us [in the UK] than divides us” but that the societal attention often highlights disagreement.

“The reasons for public dissatisfaction are clear,” he said. “Economically lots of places are in tough situations now and that’s going to prompt desires for change. But I have seen the ability to unite the country. I saw during Covid people doing shopping for the neighbours and that’s when we as a nation are at our best, when we’ve been pushed into a corner and come out and shown resilience.”

The manager’s upcoming publication, titled Dear England, is scheduled to provide further insights on management and country pride drawn from his remarkable time in football.
