The people of Israel mark two-year anniversary of 7 October attacks as Gaza ceasefire talks continue
People have come together across the country to commemorate 24 months since the Hamas-initiated offensive on October 7th, 2023, as negotiations continued in Egypt over an end to the hostilities in the Gaza Strip.
The assault resulted in in excess of 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others abducted back to Gaza as hostages. It was the single most fatal day for Jewish people since the World War II.
Israel answered by beginning a defensive operation in Gaza which has taken in excess of 67,000 people, according to the territory's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its statistics are seen as accurate by the United Nations and other world agencies.
"Our violent enemies have hit us hard, but they have not defeated us," Benjamin Netanyahu added on Tuesday.
He also vowed to "realize all the goals of the war: the release of all the kidnapped, the removal of the Hamas regime and the promise that Gaza will no longer present a risk to Israel".
Commemorative Ceremonies Across Israel
The Israeli government postponed state commemorations until mid-October - after the end of the Jewish High Holiday season - but events still took place across the country on that day.
A remembrance service for the loved ones of Israelis killed in the Hamas attack was held in Tel Aviv. Organized by the families themselves, it was aired across Israeli TV networks.
Hours earlier, a minute's silence was respected across the country.
Negotiation Discussions in Egypt
Simultaneously, the conflicting parties' delegations met in the North African Red Sea resort of the Egyptian city for a second day of mediated discussions to discuss the conditions of the plan.
A high-ranking representative knowledgeable about the discussions revealed that an evening round of negotiations started at 19:00 Cairo time.
The representative said the day's discussions concluded without tangible results, amid disagreements over the suggested Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over assurances Hamas demands to make certain Israel does not recommence combat after the first phase of the agreement.
He noted that the discussions are "tough and have not yet deliver any real breakthrough," but mentioned that intermediaries are making efforts to close the gaps between the two sides.
Essential Issues in Talks
- A lasting truce
- The trade of the hostages still kept by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
- The removal of military personnel from Gaza
- Plans for relief supplies distribution
- Future administration of the region
Citizen Feeling
In Tel Aviv's memorial area that day, young Hagar - whose brother lived through the incident on the Nova music festival, where 378 people were murdered and many more were taken hostage by Hamas fighters - shared: "No location feels like home any longer and until all the hostages come back not a single person will be secure."
"Once we see everyone home returned, we can relax once more. Then we can start to heal," she added.
Near the leader's official dwelling in Jerusalem, people gathered to express their backing for the loved ones of the captives. Israel states forty-eight continue in confinement in Gaza, twenty of whom are believed to be surviving.
Demonstrator one woman explained: "We must do any agreement necessary for the abducted to come back home. But we sincerely need guarantees that we will be safe."
Opinion polls now regularly indicate that around 70% of Israelis want the hostilities to finish in as payment for the release of the captives.
Gaza Conditions
At the site of Nova festival, mourners assembled to honor the dead.
From there, the noise of military attacks and artillery could be noticed just a brief space away in Gaza, where witnesses indicated the severe Israeli bombardment continued.
In the urban center, bombardments were reported in the early hours of that day in the west side district, Rimal and Nasr districts and in the east side area of that sector, as well the camp to the north-west.
"When the evening falls, the dread arrives with it," displaced Gaza City resident a local woman, whose teenage son was killed by an Israeli air strike last year, explained.
"My family are terrified of the bombings. All the night we are lying together, clinging, notably my youngest child who puts his head on me the entire evening."
"Continuously we look at the news to see the situation. And I'm afraid that this halt will not be completed and that the fighting will return to us."
Humanitarian Crisis
The healthcare center in Gaza City said it had received the bodies of several people by the daytime, including three who lost their lives in an Israeli bombing in the southern district.
Another medical facility in the southern urban center of Khan Younis said additional fatalities had been transported. One of them was died by Israeli forces while looking for help to the south, health workers stated.
