The Trump movement's most illuminating and distinctive occasions – not its most important, nor most brutal, nor most threatening, nor stupidest, but possibly its most revealing – occurred earlier this fall. During the period of a few weeks, the US president started showing the public his intentions for an ornate dance hall two times larger compared to the White House and subsequently started unilaterally ripping down the East Wing to erect it.
He has performed deeds countless times more severe – the current estimate of deaths from his cuts to USAID stands at 600,000 and increasing, and recently research projected his petroleum strategies would result in fatalities an additional 1.3 million. However nothing as distinctive. No former leader would have attempted – genuinely, no previous leader would have contemplated – unilaterally destroying major areas of the executive mansion to build a royal-themed celebration hall, with the direct cooperation of numerous America's wealthiest, almost all of whom have business with public institutions.

As bewildering as it is to watch the leader attempt to overturn the traditional concept regarding democracy and replace it with its complete opposite, there remains a substantial portion among Americans who wouldn't consider it totally unfamiliar. That encompasses people such as ourselves – within elder demographics almost a majority – who were raised within mainstream Protestant traditions.
We have watched throughout the years as rightwing evangelical churches converted the Savior we were raised with into exactly the opposite of who we understood him to be. At its most basic, they converted a persona of affection into a figure of hate who approves specifically the brutality that he condemned in the Gospel; this transformation occurred at a slower pace, through multiple decades as opposed to months, but it is nonetheless disconcerting in the same ways, a confusing personal impact for many of us.
A Damaging Christianity Establishes Itself
Therefore allow me to outline the Savior from my upbringing, since in theory the Savior is the core within Christian belief, and given that the fastest-growing cadre among Americans could have minimal awareness regarding him as they consider themselves non-believers or doubters or nones. I raise no objection with any of these traditions, nor with different religions; however I believe that there are pearls of substantial value in the Christian story.
It is emphatically absolutely not the story of a mighty king appearing; rather, an infant arrives to parents without shelter in an automotive shelter, who need to rapidly escape to another nation to avoid secret police. The baby grows up in modest conditions, a working carpenter; his message is about love for others, specifically for the disadvantaged – not simply tender feelings, but a concrete one, expressed by feeding and sheltering. Jesus' answer to violence is to offer the other cheek – not as an act of compliant endurance, but as a method to teach the attacker; his crime policy is that if a person pilfers your coat you should give the person your additional clothing too.
The evident and direct reality that the Savior of the gospels requests a form of profound affection focused on the impoverished is what has always made Christianity something of a provocative belief system: appealing to the populace, but because of its inherent radicalness demanding to be controlled. In the 1950s it was restrained by dilution – Protestantism was so prevalent that it practically sanctified existing conditions.
A Conflict for the Highest of Us
So I have been encouraged to witness the steadfast resistance against Trump emerge in this past year. It has provided great solace to participate in developing the campaign that has taken to the streets via continuous gatherings, and seems to have inspired voters to turn out in numbers in the off-year elections. We will need to persist with it, and in the same spirit, with American flags at every demonstration and calls to the best parts in US history.
We will be questioned ... how did you receive the foreigner? Did you accept these individuals and receive them or not?
The country is optimally secured, essentially, by relationship to the best within national tradition, just as Christianity is best defended by relationship to elements that cause it to be unique and magnificent, particularly the pattern of Christ. In neither case does it imply feigning the worst of both America and religious tradition never occurred; it means both meekness and conviction, a mixture that serious American Christians should embrace.
