Two Cuba-bound Aid Sailboats Declared Lost after Departing Mexican Waters.
A extensive search and rescue operation is actively ongoing in the Caribbean waters for a duo of unlocated sailboats carrying relief goods traveling from Mexico to Cuba.
Naval Search Efforts Initiated
Authorities in Mexico has deployed naval assets and search planes to search for the Friendship and Tigger Moth, which were transporting a minimum of 9 crew members, as stated by a navy statement.
The vessels had been projected to make landfall in the Cuban capital on Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been a complete lack of contact from them and zero verification of their docking, the navy said.
Context of Humanitarian Support to the Island
The Caribbean nation has relied heavily on aid convoys from Mexico over the past few weeks, as the island endures repeated national electricity failures.
"The captains and crews are veteran seafarers, and the two ships are fitted with proper navigational gear and emergency beacons," an official associated with the mission stated.
The nine crew members are nationals of the United States, Cuba, France, and Poland. Officials said it has established contact with rescue coordination centers from the involved countries along with their consular staff.
"Our team is working closely with the relevant authorities and are still optimistic in the capability of the sailors to safely arrive in Havana," the statement continued.
Recent Relief Mission
Just days before, the Cuban government warmly welcomed and warmly received a different ship that had transported 14 tons of humanitarian aid to the island.
That vessel, dubbed "a modern Granma" following the name of the boat in which Castro landed in Cuba to begin the Cuban Revolution in the mid-20th century, delivered solar panels, medicines, baby formula, bikes and food.
Larger International Backdrop
Non-governmental organizations and volunteers have been at the forefront of attempts to bring essential supplies to Cuba since January, coinciding with the time a fuel embargo on the island nation was initiated.
The United Nations have since highlighted "dire" supply shortages, with in excess of fifty thousand surgical procedures called off in Cuba due to electricity supply constraints.
Diplomatic tensions have increased in recent months, with statements from various leaders emphasizing the delicate situation regarding bilateral relations.
Responding to previous comments, a high-ranking government figure stated firmly that "the political system of Cuba is not subject to discussion."
Accounts suggest that initial phases of discussions had begun, although their current progress remains not publicly known.
The naval forces stated it was committed to using all of the resources at its reach to locate the boats and guarantee the safety of the crews.
As of now, there has been no public statement on the disappeared vessels by the government in Havana.
