UN:Me: A Psychological Thriller That Blends Silent Hill and Social Deduction Gameplay
The latest Day of the Devs online presentation revealed a number of fascinating future games, but one especially has seized the imagination: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player experience seems to blend the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill game with the paranoid deduction heart of Among Us.
"It's a distinctive experience where a girl harboring multiple human souls within her must escape from a maze of the mind," explains producer Yasukazu Kawai.
Stepping Into a Fractured Mind
In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed heroine seeming to be of teenage years. Inside her reside four distinct souls, all possessing their own anxieties and drives. These souls can take over at will, unleashing their deep-seated terrors upon her suddenly.
Judging by showcased footage, much of the action unfolds within a creepy hospital, while additional clips show the main character navigating a desolate chapel.
A World of Personal Dread
"What are you afraid of? What causes you uneasy?" poses creative lead Shun Sasaki. "High places. Small rooms. People in power. Elements that appear minor to others can activate a deep instinct inside us. This game explores that concept — fears that are unique to each person."
The core mechanic involves managing whichever soul surfaces at a particular moment. However, these identities will switch involuntarily as you play. During exploration, each soul's fears become exaggerated and attack the girl in succession. When the soul shifts, so does the specific fear the player experiences.
Eerie Visuals and a Deadly Choice
Initially, UN:Me displays noticeable aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill franchise. The hospital is filled with orderlies who all share the identical visage, with disturbingly broad grins. Patients in the waiting room have enormous flowers growing from their heads should be. Floral motifs are a recurring theme, juxtaposing natural beauty with unnatural horror.
Yet, UN:Me presents a singular mechanic. Players must determine which of the four entities inhabiting the heroine is the "true" one. "Each of the personas asserts that the physical form belongs to them," notes a developer. "Throughout the game, you must determine who is real."
After a player have deduced a persona is an impostor, they are forced to destroy it. However, because every entity can deceive or hide the truth, it is incredibly simple to choose incorrectly.
"Perhaps you've already destroyed the real [soul] with your own hands," the narration suggests. "The last one remaining could be a fake. Either way, your choices are final."
UN:Me currently lacks a publicly announced launch window, but it is available to wishlist on platforms.
